Lady Vols Open Regional With 9-0 Win Over Monmouth

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- 10th seeded Tennessee opened the NCAA Softball Championship with a dominant 9-0 win over Monmouth on Friday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Lady Vols (46-12) were fueled by a stellar performance on the mound from junior Matty Moss as well as a consistent effort offensively to take down the Hawks (32-15) in five innings. Moss finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits to improve to 18-6 on the season.
Tennessee got things started early, as a leadoff walk drawn by Aubrey Leach in the first inning was followed up with a two-run home over the center field wall from Meghan Gregg. The blast was Gregg's 17th of the year. The Lady Vols would make it 3-0 in the second frame as Chelsea hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing Jenna Holcomb to score from third.
The Lady Vols opened it up with six runs in the fourth inning. Leach reached on another leadoff walk, stole second and was able to advance to third as the throwing attempt to catch her stealing soared into center field. A wild pitch brought Leach in to increase the UT lead to 4-0. The next batter, Seggern, drilled a double to right center that brought in pinch runner Treasury Poindexter to come all the way around for another run. Three consecutive walks then scored Seggern, before an Abby Lockman sacrifice fly allowed Scarlet McSwain to tag up from third. A single from Leach later in the frame drove in two more runners to put UT over the margin of the run-rule (eight).Â
Moss would retire three straight batters in the fifth to close out the win for Tennessee. Amanda Riley was dealt the loss for Monmouth, falling to 21-6. Riley went three innings with three strikeouts and six runs allowed.
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols face a quick turnaround heading into their second game of the Knoxville Regional. UT will take on James Madison, who won its game against Ohio earlier on Friday, on Saturday at 12 p.m.Â
