#7/8 Lady Vols Close Out Tennessee Classic with 5-3 Win Over Louisville
February 25, 2019 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore outfielder Amanda Ayala played a key role in No. 7/8 Tennessee's victory over the Louisville Cardinals in the final game of the 2019 Tennessee Classic at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Monday.
The Lady Vols went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend to win the tournament and improve to 13-2 on the season.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Rogers got the start for UT and earned the win, fighting off two Louisville threats to improve to 5-0. She recorded eight strikeouts and only gave up two runs on seven hits.
Tennessee and Louisville exchanged a pair of scoreless innings before the Lady Vols took a 3-0 advantage in the third inning. Jenna Holcomb and Aubrey Leach kicked things off with a pair of singles. Amanda Ayala then brought them both home with a double to center field. The Bloomfield, N.J. native advanced to third with the help of a wild pitch and scored on Ashley Morgan's groundout to short.
In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals threatened to score after a double down the left field line from freshman Charley Butler. A groundout allowed Butler to advance to third where she would stay as Tennessee's Rogers closed out the frame.
The Big Orange added a pair of runs in the bottom of the stanza, stretching their lead to 5-0. With two outs, Ayala and Chelsea Seggern hit a pair of singles before Morgan drew a walk that would load the bases for Ally Shipman. The freshman catcher hit a single through the left side that allowed the duo to score.
Not going away without a fight, Louisville scored three runs in the sixth to trim Tennessee's lead, 5-3. A single and a one-out walk set up a three-run homer by Taylor Roby given up by Caylan Arnold who came on in relief for the Lady Vols. Rodgers returned two batters later with a runner in scoring position and proceeded to strike out consecutive batters to preserve UT's lead.
The Cardinals attempted a comeback again in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs but freshman Gracie Osbron fielded a ball at short and fired to first for the final out.
TENNESSEE CLASSIC: The Lady Vols are now 53-6 all time in Tennessee Classic games, dating back to the program's inaugural season in 1996.
