KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – As a five-time national championship winning program, Tennessee Dance is used to the spotlight.
College Magazine named the University of Tennessee Dance Team to the No. 8 spot in their article "10 Best College Dance Teams in the Nation 2019" that was released on Thursday.
The article recognizes Tennessee's consistent outstanding performances in the Jazz division over the recent years.
"I am truly honored and excited that the team I think so highly of is receiving national recognition," said head coach, Kelley Tafazzoli.
The team has a rich tradition of winning national championships and performing at the highest level year in and year out, so while this national recognition is an honor, it does not come as a surprise.
"It (the success) really goes back to the foundation of the program," Tafazzoli said. "We aren't doing anything different than we have done in years past. We are highly competitive here so we attract people who are also highly competitive. I think this success is achieved when our team meets and exceeds our own expectations."
When the team is setting the goals for the upcoming season, they do not pay attention to what the competition is doing.
"Our goals are to be better than we were the year before. We don't look at other teams, but we compete against ourselves in everything we do."
With the previous season coming to an end, Tafazzoli already knows how the team will continue to build off of this success.
"With intensity," said Tafazzoli. "We create a plan of attack and spend time preparing for everything that the team will attend. My job as a coach is to carry how we perform at basketball, volleyball, football games or any other sporting event into how we perform at nationals."
