Beautae’s Blast Not Enough As #14 Lady Vols Drop Series Opener To #10 Arkansas
March 18, 2022 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Lady Vol freshman infielder Lair Beautae cranked a three-run shot for the Big Orange, but the 10th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks came back to secure a 4-3 win over No. 14 Tennessee on Friday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
"Tonight was your typical SEC game," head coach Karen Weekly said postgame. "The margin between victory and defeat is razor-thin, and you saw a great battle right up until the last pitch. In SEC play, the team that executes best in all three phases is going to win, and tonight, that team was Arkansas."
Hogs ace and reigning SEC Pitcher of the Year Mary Haff went the distance for Arkansas (18-4, 1-0 SEC), dealing 11 strikeouts in seven innings to pick up her seventh win of the year. Tennessee lefty Erin Edmoundson's record fell to 12-2 on the season despite a quality outing, spinning seven innings with three earned runs and seven Ks.
Tennessee (19-7, 2-1 SEC) scattered six hits throughout the ballgame, highlighted by Beautae's blast in the third. Super senior left fielder Amanda Ayala notched UT's only other extra-base hit with a double that preceded Beautae's three-run homer.
With no hits for either side through the first two-and-a-half frames, Beautae broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the third with a three-run blast to the bleachers in right center. Kiki Milloy and Ayala came home on the play after leading off the frame with a single and double, respectively, breaking up Haff's brief bid for a second consecutive no-hitter.
Arkansas pushed one unearned run across in the fifth when catcher Taylor Ellsworth smacked a two-out RBI single through the middle. KB Sides scored the opening run for the Hogs after reaching on a single and advancing to second on an error in the Tennessee outfield.
Razorback freshman Kacie Hoffmann provided the go-ahead strike for Arkansas in the top of the sixth. The left-handed hitter stepped in with two runners aboard and delivered a pinch-hit, three-run homer to left field to put the Hogs up 4-3.
The Lady Vols fought right back in the bottom half as Rylie West and McKenna Gibson led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. Ivy Davis moved the runners to second and third with a sac bunt, and Milloy was intentionally walked to load the bases. Haff put an end to the Tennessee threat as she dealt her 10th strikeout of the night to escape the jam.
Edmoundson posted her fifth scoreless frame in the top of the seventh, stranding a pair of Razorbacks on first and second as she recorded a strikeout and a popout to keep it a one-run ballgame. The Lady Vols put a runner in scoring position when Zaida Puni reached on an error and her pinch runner, Shakara Goodloe, moved to second on a groundout, but West's flyout to left center ended the game.
MILLOY REACHES CENTURY MARK: With a single through the left side in the bottom of the third, junior outfielder Kiki Milloy recorded her 100th career hit for the Lady Vols. The Woodinville, Washington, native sports a career average of .330 and leads the Big Orange this season at a .366 clip.
THREE HOME GAMES, THREE HOME RUNS: Freshman infielder Lair Beautae has found her place inside the batter's box at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Riverside, California, product has a home run in each of her last three home games, including three-run shots against Virginia (3/6) and Arkansas (3/18) and a solo blast vs. Austin Peay (3/8).
UP NEXT: Game two of the three-game set against Arkansas is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Gates will open at noon, and the game will be broadcasted online via SEC Network+.
