Tennessee Tops Carson-Newman in Final Meet of Opening Weekend

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee swimming and diving closed out its opening weekend of competition with a dual meet victory over Carson-Newman. The Lady Vols earned the win by a score of 152-84, with the Vols coming out on top by a score of 164-121.
Both teams dominated throughout, with Tennessee earning a combined 22 wins on the day. The morning got started with a sweep of the 200 medley relay, with Tennessee's A and B relay teams on both the men's and women's side finishing first and second respectively. Mac Clark secured a pair of wins, coming out on top in the 200 Back and 1000 Free. Pedro Sansone came to the wall first in the 50 free on a 19.52, his first individual win of the season.
Multiple Vols collected wins in their first collegiate meets. Mantas Kaušpedas threw down a 47.15 for the victory in the 100 Back in his first collegiate meet. Kauã Marinho opened his account for the season with a first place finish in the 100 free on a time of 43.42, followed by Lúcio Paula (43.50) in second place. Whitaker Steward dominated in the 500 free for UT, finishing first with a 4:32.04. The freshman also earned a podium finish in the 1000 free in second on a time of 9:25.58.
Eliza Wallace got two wins in her collegiate debut, with wins in the 100 breast (1:01.19) and the 200 breast (2:13.42). Meredith Whelehan had a productive day in the water, placing first twice for the Lady Vols. The sophomore opened her day with a win in the 200 free, thanks to a time of 1:45.92. Whelehan had her second win for the Big Orange in the 100 free, touching the wall with a time of 49.43.
Sophie Brison put together a dominant performance in the 200 back for Tennessee, with a time of 1:55.47 to finish first. Brison earned her second top three finish of the meet in the 100 back, placing third on a 53.97. Alyssa Claborn threw down the fastest time in the 100 back, posting a 53.36 en route to first place. Amelia Mason joined in on the fun, using a time of 23.02 in the 50 free to get her first individual victory of the season.
Desharne Bent-Ashmeil got her season off to a fast start, with a pair of victories in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. In the 1-meter, Bent-Ashmeil set a new personal best score of 319.50 to move into seventh on the UT record books. Luisa Fragoeiro Arco finished in the top three in both events, placing second in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter. Isabel Baley finished in second place in the 1-meter, earning a top three finish in her first collegiate meet.
After earning First Team All-American honors last season, Bennett Greene opened his junior campaign with two strong performances in the dual. Greene put up a score of 411.23 in the 3-meter, adding a score of 375.23 in the 1-meter. Both Juan Manuel Lopez Gomez and Ivor Brown made their first appearances for UT on Saturday, both competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter to begin their respective college careers.

- Matea Gigovic made her Lady Vol debut on Saturday, finishing third overall in both the 50 free (23.33) and 100 free (50.89).
- Pitt transfer Kimmy Shannon made her Tennessee debut in the dual meet, placing second in the 200 back on a time of 1:57.21, while also finishing in third in the 200 free with a 1:49.77.
- Aidan Hill had two second place finishes on Saturday, doing so in the 100 fly (49.16) and 200 fly (1:47.86).
- Miles Blackson-Dunbar finished second in the 100 back, doing so on a time of 50.30.
