The Tennessee men's basketball checks in at sixth nationally in the Blue Ribbon Yearbook preseason rankings, as well as seventh on ESPN's "Way-Too-Early" list released in September. The Volunteers have 13 new players, including a nine-man transfer group that, per 247Sports, ranked third in the country and atop the SEC. Last year, Tennessee posted its fifth consecutive 25-win season (25-12), its fifth straight AP top-20 finish (No. 12) and third Elite Eight appearance in a row. The Volunteers are entering their 12th season under the leadership of head coach Rick Barnes, whose 861 career wins rank top-10 in Division I history, including second among active coaches.
The Lady Vols, who are ranked No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports "Way-Too-Early" Top 25, head into year three of the Kim Caldwell era and seek their third straight NCAA appearance under her watch and the program's 45th consecutive overall. Caldwell will lead a rebuilt 15-player roster, comprised of 13 transfers and two freshmen. USA TODAY Sports rated the Big Orange's portal class No. 9 overall and No. 2 in the SEC, while On3 has the Big Orange tabbed at No. 10 overall and fourth in the SEC. Nine of those newcomers were double-figure scorers at their previous schools, and eight have earned individual postseason accolades for their play.
The Volunteers' non-conference schedule includes a Nov. 17 matchup with Michigan State and a Dec. 1 SEC/ACC Challenge clash with Florida State. Tennessee will also host Wofford on Nov. 3, Radford on Nov. 9, Tennessee State on Nov. 13, Coastal Carolina on Nov. 20, Morehead State on Dec. 16, Marist on Dec. 20 and Norfolk State on Dec. 29. Furthermore, the team will play a season-opening exhibition versus Xavier on Oct. 15.
During the conference slate, Tennessee has home affairs slated against Vanderbilt on Jan. 2, Missouri on Jan. 13, Arkansas on Jan. 16, Florida on Jan. 30, Georgia on Feb. 3, Kentucky on Feb. 13, Alabama on Feb. 20, South Carolina on Feb. 23 and Mississippi State on March 2.
The Tennessee women, meanwhile, feature a non-conference home schedule highlighted by a visit from 2026 NCAA champion UCLA on Nov. 22. Other non-league visitors to Rocky Top include Duquesne on Nov. 2, New Haven on Nov. 10, in-state rival Middle Tennessee on Nov. 12, Radford on Nov. 22, Georgia State on Dec. 6, NC Central on Dec. 8, Alabama A&M on Dec. 15 and Morehead State on Dec. 21. Five of those teams saw postseason action a year ago. Additionally, Caldwell's squad entertains LVFL Bridgette Gordon and her Florida A&M squad in an Oct. 27 exhibition.
In SEC play, the Lady Vols play host to five teams ranked in the preseason top 25. First comes No. 14 Ole Miss on Jan. 3, followed by No. 23 Oklahoma on Jan. 10, Georgia on Jan. 14, Alabama on Jan. 24, No. 1 South Carolina on Jan. 28, Auburn on Feb. 11, No. 18 Kentucky on Feb. 21 and No. 7 LSU on Feb. 25.
