Lady Vols Suffer Defeat to Clinical No. 11 South Carolina
October 09, 2026 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tennessee soccer suffered its third defeat of the 2026 season on Friday night, falling 2-0 at No. 11 South Carolina.
The Lady Vols (6-3-3, 1-3-2) spent much of the match in possession of the ball, registering a total of 11 shots in the contest, but were unable to break the seal on the Gamecock goal over 90 minutes. South Carolina proved to be an opportunistic opponent, netting two goals on just five shots, converting the team's only two shots on target in the match.
After a tame opening 20 minutes where neither team generated a serious goalscoring opportunity, the Gamecocks found the opening goal from a set piece in the 25th minute, heading home a corner off the underside of the crossbar. The goal marked the third consecutive match Tennessee conceded the opening goal. The resulting 1-0 halftime advantage for South Carolina was just the second time the Lady Vols have trailed at the break this season, with the first instance coming in the previous match at Auburn.
Starting the second stanza, there was clear attacking intent for Tennessee, who would outshoot the Gamecocks 7-2 over the final 45 minutes. Despite continued spells of possession, South Carolina struck on the counterattack in the 55th minute to establish a 2-0 advantage.
A two-goal deficit proved to be a steep task for Tennessee against a team that entered the match with a 0.50 goals-against average, the second best in the conference. Despite multiple near misses, including a headed effort off the post by Jayla Blue in the 78th minute, the Lady Vols were shutout for the second consecutive match as South Carolina claimed the 2-0 win on home turf.
Tennessee will look to snap a three-match losing streak on Thursday, Oct. 15, as the team opens a two-match home stand against Arkansas. Kickoff at Regal Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
