#3 Lady Vols Improve to 10-0 with 9-1 Win Over #7 Florida State

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The third-ranked Lady Vols improved to 10-0 on the year with a 9-1 victory over No. 7 Florida State on Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. Tennessee completed its stay at the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational with a 5-0 record.
Tennessee knocked off four National Fastpitch Coaches Association-ranked opponents over the weekend. Through its first 10 games of the season, UT has six wins over teams ranked in the NFCA top 25. That is the most in program history through 10 contests.
Tennessee wasted no time on Sunday, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles from Sophia Knight and Gabby Leach put two runners on. After a flyout advanced Knight and Leach into scoring position, Ella Dodge cleared the bases with a three-run home run.
Florida State (8-2) hit back in the bottom of the second. With two away and runners on the corners, back-to-back hit batters brought home a run to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Lady Vols used a big third inning to extend their lead, plating four runs on three hits. With two away in the frame, Alannah Leach pulled a single through the right side of the infield, scoring her twin, Gabby Leah, from second.
Alannah Leach stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position before Taelyn Holley walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Makenzie Butt. She dropped a single down the right field line to score Emma Clarke and Alannah Leach, with Holley advancing to third.
Bella Faw capped the scoring with a single to right, plating Holley for UT's fourth run of the inning and seventh of the game.
Clarke added a little insurance for the Big Orange, crushing a two-run home run to left center in the top of the seventh.
In the circle, Sage Mardjetko got the start and tossed 1.2 innings. She allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts. The junior gave way to Karlyn Pickens out of the bullpen.
Pickens (3-0) finished the game, throwing 5.1 frames. She held Florida State to one hit and tallied four strikeouts with two walks. The senior earned the win.

Tennessee is on the road again next weekend as it takes part in the Green and Gold Classic hosted by UAB in Birmingham, Ala.
