Strong Singles Showing Spurs Doubleheader Sweep Against Tide, Bears

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee men's tennis swept a doubleheader against Alabama and Mercer on Sunday, picking up 4-3 and 4-0 wins, respectively, with strong singles play spurring on those victories at Barksdale Stadium.
MATCH 1: Tennessee 4, Alabama 3
Doubles started out in the Vols' favor after the duo of Woodson McMillin and Boruch Skierkier won on court three, 6-2. The Crimson Tide was able to find some momentum, grabbing a victory on court one. Alabama went ahead in the match, 1-0, after court two tallied a 7-5 victory.
Singles was the turning point for the Vols. Freshman Shion Itsusaki got the comeback started for UT with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Carlos Gimenez Perez on court five. Jose Garcia put the Big Orange ahead, beating Alabama's Vit Kalina on court one, 6-1, 6-3. Boruch Skierkier added to the lead for the Volunteers, taking down Alabama's No. 4 player, Yoshka Sborowsky, 6-4, 6-1. Alabama got one back, with Andrii Zimnokh defeating No. 88 Alejandro Moreno on court two.
Piotr Siekanowicz delivered a true comeback story. Siekanowicz went down 1-4 in the first set, but he didn't count himself out. The Poland native proceeded to win the next five games and tally the first set in his favor. Siekanowicz never looked back after that, capturing the next set, 6-3, and clinching the first conference victory in 2025-26 for the Big Orange.
The remaining match was played out between UT's Jan Kobierski and UA's No. 75 Matic Kriznik. Kobierski was able to force another stanza, but Kriznik finished the match off in a 10-point tiebreak set, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
MATCH 2: Tennessee 4, Mercer 0
Tennessee started out doubles play hot. The duo of Woodson McMillin and Boruch Skierkier controlled their match on three the whole way, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Mercer fought back, but McMillin and Skierkier closed it out with a 6-3 triumph. The Big Orange's tandem of Jose Garcia and Piotr Siekanowicz won the doubles point for the Vols with a 6-3 result on court two.
Court one's match was played out despite the clinch. Mercer was able to get one back on court one with the pair of Isak Padio and Shingo Masuda overcoming Shion Itsusaki and Ethan Muza, 6-4.
UT continued the momentum into singles play, sweeping all the first sets. Piotr Siekanowicz added to his lengthy resume for the day, closing the door on Cameron Douthit in two sets, 6-2, 6-0. Dragos Cazacu was the next to finish for the Vols with another two-set conquest, pushing the lead to three against Mercer. Jan Kobierski completed the sweep for UT after he took down Alex Aldaz on court three.
The other courts went unfinished after the clincher, with the Volunteers leading on all of the remaining matches.
STRONG SUNDAY DUO
The duo of Woodson McMillin and Boruch Skierkier went undefeated on Sunday against the Bears and the Crimson Tide. The tandem played on court three in both matches, and they were the first to finish in both as well. McMillin and Skierkier did it in quick fashion, too, besting Alabama's duo, 6-2, and Mercer's duet, 6-3.
SINGLES SWEEP
The Vols have shown their solo play is strong, sweeping singles three times in the past three non-conference matches. The sweep Sunday night was the fifth time this season the Big Orange have not lost on a singles court in 2025-26, shutting out Bellarmine, EKU, Chattanooga, Belmont and Mercer.
