Pickens, Espernberger Nominated for SEC's McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens and Martin Espernberger have been nominated for the Southeastern Conference's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, as announced by the league office on Thursday.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the SEC since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

Karlyn Pickens – Softball
Pickens, a sport management major with a minor in business administration, owns a 3.66 GPA and is set to graduate in Spring 2026 with her bachelor's degree.
One of the most decorated players in program history, Pickens was named the 2025 Softball America National Pitcher of the Year and is a two-time SEC Pitcher of the Year (2024, 2025). She is also a two-time consensus First Team All-American, earning recognition from NFCA, D1Softball and Softball America in back-to-back seasons.
Pickens' success extends beyond the field. She earned 2025 CSC Second Team Academic All-America honors and is a two-time CSC Academic All-District selection. A consistent presence on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, she has been recognized each of the past two seasons and was also named to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll in 2022-23.
On the field, Pickens has been a dominant force in the circle throughout her career. The right-hander has made 128 appearances with 87 starts, compiling a 66-20 record with a 1.46 ERA. She has recorded 52 complete games, 25 shutouts and eight saves, while striking out 738 batters over 585.2 innings pitched and holding opponents to a .163 batting average.
During her career, Pickens has been named SEC Pitcher of the Week eight times and earned three SEC Freshman of the Week honors in 2023. In 2025, she became the first player to be named NFCA National Pitcher of the Week in three consecutive weeks.
Pickens has also played a key role in Tennessee's team success, helping lead the Lady Vols to two Women's College World Series appearances (2023, 2025), including trips to the national semifinals in both seasons. She was part of three SEC championship teams, contributing to regular-season titles in 2023 and 2024, as well as the 2023 SEC Tournament championship.

Martin Espernberger – Swimming & Diving
Espernberger has been an integral member of the swimming and diving program over his four years on Rocky Top. He will graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering in May, where he holds a 3.86 GPA.

He has twice been named a CSC Academic All-American, receiving the honors in 2024 and 2025. He was selected as the SEC Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year and has been tabbed to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in consecutive seasons.

The senior has won three SEC medals, including taking gold in the 200 Butterfly at the 2024 SEC Championships. Espernberger received All-America distinction three times, garnering first team honors after placing fifth in the 200 Fly at the 2025 NCAA Championships. He has earned All-SEC honors in each of his four years on Rocky Top, collecting SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2023 and being named All-SEC each of the last three seasons. He finishes his Tennessee career holding the school record in the 200 Fly with a 1:39.34, while also sitting seventh all-time in program history in the 100 Fly with a time of 45.43.

Espernberger has also achieved success on the international stage, representing his home nation Austria. He was a member of the Austrian team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he reached the final in the 200 Fly and placed sixth. Espernberger won his first medal for his home nation at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, taking the bronze in the 200 Fly. He holds the Austrian record in the 200m butterfly, setting the mark at the 2024 Summer Olympics with a 1:54.17.

The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 30 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 16 SEC institutions.
