KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Athletics has received a large philanthropic gift from VFL and NFL great running back Alvin Kamara, it was announced Thursday.
Kamara, who routinely visits Rocky Top around his busy NFL schedule, is giving back to the program that he starred for in his final two collegiate seasons from 2015-16.
Tennessee Athletics is working with Kamara on a prominent naming opportunity inside Neyland Stadium to recognize his generous commitment. He will be recognized during Saturday's Orange & White Game.
"There are certain experiences that shape you throughout your life," Kamara said. "In my heart, it was only right that I pour back into the university that gave me an opportunity when I didn't quite know what was next. The naming recognition space that we are working on, inside Neyland Stadium, will be a representation of perseverance and faith for everyone who enters for years to come."
"Alvin has made an extraordinary difference in our program, and we are profoundly grateful for this generous philanthropic gift," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Danny White. "Alvin's leadership and unwavering support have meant so much to us, and we cannot thank him enough for all he continues to do for Tennessee!"
After transferring from Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College, Kamara played 24 games for the Volunteers from 2015-16, rushing for 1,294 yards on 210 carries with 16 touchdowns. He added 74 receptions for 683 yards and seven touchdown catches.
Kamara was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints where he has become a franchise and city icon. One of the most explosive and versatile NFL running backs in modern history, Kamara has earned five Pro Bowl selections, multiple All-Pro honors, and he was the 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Kamara's consistent production in nine NFL seasons has paved the way for him to shatter five Saints franchise records, including rushing yards (7,250), rushing touchdowns (61), total touchdowns (87), total yards from scrimmage (12,198), all-purpose yardage (12,856) and first downs (601).
Since coming into the NFL in 2017, Kamara ranks third in the league in yards from scrimmage, one of only three players to have 12,000 over that span. He is the third player since 2000 with at least 1,100 scrimmage yards in each of his first eight seasons, joining Matt Forte and Pro Football Hall of Famer LaDanian Tomlinson.
Kamara and additional VFLs will be in attendance Saturday for the 2 p.m. ET start. Admission is free, and gates to Neyland Stadium open at 1 p.m.
