Van Kan Ties for Fifth Place at NCAA Championships
May 26, 2026 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – The final round of a historic season for the No. 18 Tennessee women's golf team was played by Kyra Van Kan on Monday afternoon, as the Lady Vol sophomore competed individually in the fourth round of the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa.
The All-SEC Second Team selection entered the day at 7-under-par and carded an even-par 72 in her final 18 of the week. Van Kan closes the event tied for fifth place, the second-best individual placement at the NCAA Championships in program history. Assistant Coach Anna Newell holds onto the highest placement, as she finished fourth at the 2016 edition of the tournament.
While the 72-hole format is a rarity in college golf, Van Kan's final tally of 7-under-par set a new low mark in program history. It surpasses the previous 72-hole high of 6-under-par earned by Newell in her 2016 NCAA Championships run.
After finding the water and recording bogey on her second hole of the day, hole No. 11, Van Kan immediately responded with a long birdie on hole No. 12. Following 11 straight pars, the Johannesburg, South Africa, native earned her second birdie of the day on hole No. 6, which was quickly offset by a bogey on hole No. 7. With a final round-four tally of two birdies and two bogeys, Van Kan clinched four consecutive rounds of par or better at the NCAA Championships.
After the Lady Vols concluded the team portion of the tournament tied for 18th place on Sunday, Van Kan's final round marks the end of a 2025-26 season that saw the team earn its first SEC Championship in program history and a team-record four tournament victories. Tennessee will look to build on the momentum with a third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance in 2027.
