Messimer and Van Kan Named WGCA Honorable Mention All-Americans
June 02, 2026 | Women's Golf
FRISCO, Texas – Tennessee freshman Madison Messimer and sophomore Kyra Van Kan became the 14th and 15th Lady Vol golfers to ever earn All-American honors on Tuesday afternoon.
The pair were each named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). They become the first Tennessee women's golfers to garner All-American recognition since assistant coach Anna Newell was named a First Team All-American as a student athlete in 2016. It is the third time in program history, and first since 2015, that the Lady Vols have had multiple All-Americans in the same season.
Additionally, Messimer becomes the first freshman to be named an All-American since Newell was also named an Honorable Mention All-American at the conclusion of her debut season on rocky top in 2015. For her phenomenal freshman season, Messimer was also named to the WGCA Division I All-Freshman Team on Tuesday morning. The honor recognizes the five best freshmen in the 2025-26 college golf season.
In what has been one of the best seasons in program history for Tennessee women's golf, both Messimer and Van Kan have been statistical leaders for the Lady Vols. Van Kan set new single-season program records with a 71.00 scoring average and 21 rounds of par or better. The sophomore posted six top ten finishes, including an individual victory at the Paradise Invitational, capped by a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Championships, the second-best finish ever by a Lady Vol at the event.
Messimer's had a similar output for Tennessee. The freshman notched a 71.11 scoring average and 20 rounds of par or better, both surpassing the previous single-season records entering the 2025-26 season. Messimer clinched seven top ten finishes this season, including a victory at the Chris Banister Golf Classic and a runner-up finish in her SEC Championships debut.
The All-American and All-Freshman accolades add on to a list of accolades for Messimer that includes SEC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-SEC, and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. Van Kan earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team for her impressive sophomore season.
