Bertani Selected to Head UT Compliance Staff
Jan. 20, 2004
Tennessee Director of Athletics Mike Hamilton today announced the addition of Brad Bertani to the position of Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance. Bertani replaces Malcolm McInnis, who retired Dec. 31 from full-time service after 12 years in the position.
"We are pleased about adding Brad to our staff," Hamilton said. "In pursuing the right candidate, we sought someone who had both national office experience as well as practical campus application. Brad brings these experiences as well as a great compatibility with our staff and we look forward to his impact on Tennessee athletics."
Bertani, 34, comes to UT from Marshall University, where he held the same position since January 2002. The Columbus, Ohio, native oversaw Marshall's athletics compliance program for 16 varsity sports and more than 400 student-athletes.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to be a part of the UT family of coaches and administrators," Bertani said. "I believe I can offer good service to both the coaches, the staff and the community regarding rules compliance.
Bertani expects to begin his duties Feb. 16.
Prior to his Marshall employment, Bertani worked four years as a membership services representative for the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
"I trust my experience gives me a good view of both sides of compliance issues. First, working with the NCAA, and then transferring that to the college level. I look forward to being a part of the Southeastern Conference, having worked with Commissioner Slive when he was chair of the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee."
Bertani served as an athletics compliance and academic coordinator at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1994-97, and before that spent six months as assistant to the compliance director at Ohio State University.
He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Denison University in 1991, and then completed both a master's in sports administration at Ohio University and his law degree at Capital University in 1994.
Bertani is married to the former Gretchen Harris of Columbus, Ohio. They have three children, Lydia, 6, Joey, 2, and Lindsey, 10 months.
