The University of Tennessee and Edamerica honored student-athletes Scooter McFadgon and Wade Orr for their service in athletics and academics, respectively.
McFadgon was named Edamerica Athlete of the Month for January thanks to his gutsy effort on the basketball court. The junior from Memphis is in his first season with the Vols' basketball team, making an immediate impact not only on Rocky Top but also around the Southeastern Conference.
As the Vols began SEC play, McFadgon kindly introduced himself to the league's premiere teams and has waltzed his way to the top of the pack. At month's end, he stood one-tenth of a point off the league lead in scoring at 19 points per game. However, he ranked first in scoring with a 21-point average in SEC games only. McFadgon was tops in free-throw percentage at 93.8 percent and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage with a 36.3-percent mark.
During January, the guard dropped 22 points against Massachusetts and opened conference play with a 31-point barrage in Tennessee's victory against Georgia. He had 20 in a win against Vanderbilt before exploding for a career-high 33 in the Vols' overtime loss against Kentucky. McFadgon closed the month with back-to-back 20-point efforts at Mississippi State and against Florida.
McFadgon averaged 19.4 points during January. He went 59-of-62 from the free-throw line for the month and had a streak of 32 consecutive foul shots end against Louisville.
Edamerica also named Orr its January recipient for Scholar-Athlete of the Month. The senior tennis player from Clarksville is majoring in industrial engineering. Orr was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore and junior and has received other academic honors while studying at Tennessee.
Orr has not only provided leadership for the Vols' tennis squad by setting high academic standards, but he has also shown courageous efforts on the court. He rumbled his way into the round of 16 at the SEC Indoor Championships in Athens, Ga., after entering the competition unranked and unseeded. His victory against Mississippi's Catalin Gard, the fourth seed and the nation's 20th-ranked player, was arguably the biggest win of his career.
Orr is the only team member remaining from all three of Tennessee's semifinal round appearances at the NCAA Championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
