Vols' Scholar Student-Athletes to be Recognized Wednesday at Arkansas Game
Feb. 10, 2004
The University of Tennessee Athletic Department announced today that 113 male student-athletes, or 38 percent, achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester of 2003.
"I am very proud of the accomplishments our student-athletes have made, said UT athletic director Mike Hamilton. "The addition of the Thornton Center in 2001 has proven to be a great asset for all our student-athletes. The number of student-athletes attaining a 3.0 or better has risen from last spring, and we look forward to it rising in the future."
"The students who achieve academically and athletically demonstrate how the skills and abilities needed to excel in their sport are directly related to success in the classroom - focus, discipline, time management and the desire to win in all areas of their lives," said Ruth Darling, associate provost and director of the Thornton Athletics Student Center.
Because of their dedication in the classroom, many of Tennessee's student-athletes receive national recognition for their academic success. Here are some of the highlights:
- 113 male student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA in fall 2003
- 66 male student-athletes earned SEC Academic Honor Roll distinction in the 2002-2003 season
- In their freshman year, male student-athletes have a higher average GPA than their non-athlete counterparts
The 113 male scholar student-athletes will be recognized during halftime
of Wednesday's (8 p.m.) game against Arkansas Thompson-Boling
Arena.
