Edamerica and the University of Tennessee honored track and field's Garland Porter and basketball's Brandon Crump for their respective athletic and academic accomplishments during the month of February.
Porter is the Edamerica Athlete of the Month for February. The junior thrower on the Vols' track and field team is in his first year of competition at Tennessee after transferring from Barton County Community College.
It took little time for the Indianapolis product to get comfortable on The Hill. He smashed the school weight throw record three times while updating the Stokely Athletics Center record in the event during a 10-day period in February.
Porter began his blistering stretch by winning the weight throw with a launch of 67-4.75 and winning the shot put with a season-best and NCAA indoor provisional qualifier of 58-4. His weight throw passed the old school record of 66-6.5 set by Wes Boudreau in 1997. The toss snapped the facility record of 64-6.75 set by South Carolina's Ron Willis in 1993.
At the SEC Indoor Championships, Porter earned 11 points as Tennessee's high scorer by breaking his own school record twice in one day. His final weight throw of 69-5.25 broke his own school mark and was nearly three feet farther than any other Tennessee competitor has thrown the 35-pound weight. Porter finished second in the weight throw and finished the SEC meet as the Vols' high scorer.
Crump was honored as Edamerica Scholar-Athlete of the Month. The junior from Houston is majoring in sport management and has proved to be one of the top academic performers on this year's Vols basketball team.
Not only has Crump performed with his mind, but he's shined with his body as well. With two games remaining in the regular season, he ranks second on the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game. He's also averaging 7.1 rebounds and shoots 55.8 percent from the floor to lead Tennessee. He's had eight double-doubles on the season and had three consecutive games during the month of February when he averaged 20.6 points per contest.
This marks the second month Crump has been honored by Edamerica, earning Athlete of the Month honors in December.
