Five Former SEC Student-Athletes Named TSN ''Good Guys''
Tennessee's Allan Houston and Peyton Manning are among five former Southeastern Conference student-athletes who have been named "Good Guys" for 2004 by The Sporting News. Each year since 1999, the publication lists professional athletes who "open their hearts as well as their wallets to serve the needy and unfortunate."
Listed among athletes from Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and NASCAR were former Tennessee Vol basketball great and current New York Knick Allan Houston, former Auburn Tiger and Kansas Chief fullback Tony Richardson, former Tennessee Vol All-America quarterback and Indianapolis Colt Peyton Manning, former Florida Gator and current Tennessee Titan defensive end Kevin Carter and former Auburn Tiger and current Cincinnati Bengal offensive tackle Willie Anderson.
Below is a brief description of the impact that these athletes are making in their communities as written in the July 5, 2004 issue of The Sporting News:
ALLAN HOUSTON
Three programs include an essay contest for all 1,400 New York City public schools,
an enrichment program for the department of education's mentoring program and
a basketball tournament. Funds scholarships through a $25,000 annual gift.
PEYTON MANNING
Sponsors football games at the RCA Dome for inner-city schools, raising $160,000
for their sports programs. Was the host of 2,000 needy kids at Christmas parties
in three cities and for another 800 people at a Thanksgiving lunch.
TONY RICHARDSON
Has made more than 400 community appearances in the past four years. Donated
4,800 backpacks with supplies to a city mission. Donated 24,000 dictionaries
to local third-graders last year; now has given 51,000 dictionaries to schools.
KEVIN CARTER
Celebrity dinner where players wait on tables has raised $250,000 for needy
causes. Has an incentive program for a local Boys & Girls Club that has
rewarded 450 kids with game tickets.
WILLIE ANDERSON
Feeds more than 500 people in both Mobile, Ala., and Cincinnati on an ongoing
basis. Sent his high school choir from Mobile to sing at the White House this
past spring.
Currently, the SEC has a "Good Works Team" in its 20-sponsored sports, recognizing student-athletes for their community service and campus activities. Also, South Carolina basketball player Mike Boynton, Jr. and Georgia swimmer Virginia Pate were named recipients of the 2003-2004 Southeastern Conference Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship in April.
