SEC Launches New Web-Based Education Initiative

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Building on the overwhelming success of last year's Education Initiative that impacted over one million students, the Southeastern Conference announced the release of a new web-based version of the Kid's CollegeTM program.
The 2003-04 Initiative launches in September and continues the SEC's comprehensive campaign to assist teachers in providing a solid educational foundation for young students. The new release of Kid's CollegeTM will be available online to every public and private K-8 school classroom in the nine-state SEC region. This valuable resource has proven effective and will continue to help teach math and language as well as motivate students, improve test scores and inspire a student's interest in higher education.
"The SEC is pleased to reinforce its leadership role in reaching out to teachers and students throughout the region." Commissioner Mike Slive said. "It has been exciting to see how this program has challenged and encouraged children to focus on learning. It is critical for young people to realize that athletic success can only be achieved when it is preceded by academic success. This is essential to the development of our future student-athletes."
Each of the SEC's member institutions will have its own segment in the program that allows a student to explore the institution through a virtual tour of the campus. The program will be available in English and Spanish, and a CD-ROM version of the program will be available at retail for home use.
As students learn through interactive sports games, exciting new levels of game play are unlocked by completing challenging math and language questions. Virtual coaches provide directions and tips. Other special features of the new program include content that correlates to specific state standards and a real-time reporting tool designed for teachers to track the academic progress of each student.
Kids College is a product of Learning Through Sports, LLC. "We're very excited to extend our partnership with the SEC," said Founder and CEO Brian Shulman. "Their vision a year ago allowed us to positively impact over one million students. The combination of familiar SEC sports brands integrated with our unique learning program motivates students and makes learning fun."
