Tennessee Closes Home Schedule at Knoxville Invitational
Adrian Wheatley clocked his season best in the 800M run to finish second in 1:49.39. Wheatley also competed Saturday evening in Philadelphia, Pa., at the Penn Relays, as did several Vols who competed in Knoxville and Gainesville. Matt Rush finished second with a season-best 14.34 in the 110M hurdles. Meanwhile, Matt Dewalt continued to improve as he ran a career-best 9:45.51 to take bronze in the steeplechase. Freshman Leigh Smith took third in the discus with a 138-11 mark.
It also proved to be a solid day for fomer Vols on the home track. Tim Mack, one of America's top pole vaulters, cleared 18-10 1/4 to win the event. Mack saved his last attempts for 19-2 1/4, which would have been the second-highest clearance by an American this year (former Vol Lawrence Johnson holds the top U.S. clearance in 2001) and the third-highest in the world this year. Mack came closest on his third attempt, but brushed the bar onto the mat. Additionally, former Vol Dawane Wallace, the Tom Black Track 110M hurdles record holder with a 13.30 at Sea Rays, won his signature event in a speedy 13.41.
Tennessee will join its conference brethren at the SEC Outdoor Championships May 10-13 in Columbia, S.C. The meet should be very competitive with seven of the top eight teams in the nation calling the SEC home.
