Vols Distance Corps and Throwers Take Three Wins at Virginia Tech
4/21/2001
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Tennessee's third-ranked track squad posted a flurry of personal-best and season-best marks at the Spring Gobbler Invitational at Virginia Tech.? Jebreh Harris, Marcus Tanner and Lance Jauron notched wins in the 400M dash, 800M run and discus, respectively.
Harris, traditionally an 800M man, ran a lifetime best 46.27 in winning the 400M dash.? Harris, who posted a provisional 800M run time last weekend at the Sea Ray Relays, missed the 400M dash provisional standard by just .07 of a second.????? Tanner, traditionally a 1,500M man, took the gold in the 800M run in a season-best 1:52.03, a full second faster than his previous best effort this season. Lance Jauron took the discus win with a 177-11 measurement.? Jauron already has a NCAA provisional mark in the event with a 187-2 from earlier this season.? Jauron also nabbed second in the hammer with a season-best 178-6.
Justin Gatlin cleared the 110M hurdles in 13.84, a provisional time and his wind-legal personal best, to earn second. Damion Drummond, another freshman, ran a strong second-place, 1:52.20 in the 800M run, bettering his career best by early a full second.? Freshman Tim Kelly lopped more than three seconds off his career-best 1,500M run time with a third-place, 3:55.92 effort.
Junior Adrian Wheatley cleared the 400M hurdles in a personal-best 52.51, almost a second faster than he had ever run the event, to stand third.? Matt Dewalt sliced more than seven seconds off his previous personal best by taking bronze in the steeplechase.? In addition to Jauron's exploits in the throws, Steve Pitlik also had a solid day.? Pitlik took third in the hammer with a personal-best 176-3 and second in the discus (159-3).
Tennessee chose unconventional personnel for the 4x400M relay.? Sprinter Russell Frye led off the effort followed by distance specialists Drummond, Tanner and Rob Cloutier.? The Vols took fifth in 3:20.09.? Tennessee already has a provisional time of 3:04.89 in the event from March.
The Volunteers return to action at the venerable Penn Relays April 26-28.
