Vols Continue Preseason Work
Aug. 17, 2001
Tennessee returned to the practice field Friday morning with an hour-and 45-minute workout at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
For the first time this season the Vols worked in inclement weather as a steady rain fell through most of the workout. Tennessee utilized the opportunity to work on various wet ball drills with the skill positions, especially the receivers and running backs.
Freshman quarterback C.J. Fayton worked at receiver during this morning's drills. An all-around athlete, the high school All-America from Virginia Beach, Va., also played defensive back and returned kicks for Princess Anne High School as a prep.
The afternoon practice was held on Upper Hudson Field in fair weather. The Vols worked on situational plays and position drills warming up for tomorrow's scrimmage.
"Overall, I think we got better and we had areas that we improved on," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We are going to put the best 11 players on the field and see what happens."
The Vols will not practice tomorrow morning and will hold their first major scrimmage of the fall at Neyland Stadium in the afternoon.
Miles Update
Team physician Val Gene Iven said that defensive back Willie Miles, who was injured in yesterday's situational scrimmage would be released from the hospital today.
"Willie's final diagnosis is a mild concussion and a back bruise," said Keith Clements UT football trainer. "His practice will be no contact for at least a week.
"All x-rays studies were normal," said Dr. Iven. "Willie is doing well and we expect he will be released from the hospital today."
Miles was admitted to the hospital last night for observation of head and back injuries he suffered after tackling receiver Donte Stallworth in Thursday's scrimmage.
The senior from Fort Worth, Texas started all 12 games last season at left cornerback where he broke up a team-high 10 passes.
