When Carl Smith of Morristown walked through Gate 15 before Saturday night?s game against Georgia and was stopped a second time, he thought that security was going to recheck his stadium seat. What happened was better than that. Jones was selected as the fourth ?Fan of the Game? in the University of Tennessee?s promotion of the ?Year of the Fan.? The selection was made by representatives of the Knoxville accounting firm of Van Elkins and Associates. He was accompanied by his good friend Dale Drinnon of Jefferson City, who was with him only because Jones? wife, Peggy, was home sick, Wearing an Orange hat and jacket, Smith said he saw his first game in 1949 and became a Vol fan again when he returned to East Tennessee in 1957 and obtained season tickets. He hasn?t missed too many games since. ?I had a heart attack a couple of years ago and missed half the season,? he said. ?It was the first time in 30 years I had missed.? Smith is a retired state employee who worked for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. ?I had heard about the contest before. I was really surprised I was selected? he said. ?I really I think I can find a place for everything.? Smith won a $2,500 Big Orange Checking account from First Tennessee, a twenty-five inch television courtesy of Philips, and $250 worth of gift certificates from Breadbox, Goody?s, Kroger, and World Travel. The grand prize winner, to be selected at the Vanderbilt game Nov. 22, receives a Sea Ray 185 Sport, a Toyota Tundra truck courtesy of Volunteer Toyota dealers, two season tickets to all UT athletic events for the 2004 season, $250 worth of gift certificates from each sponsor, and the opportunity to run through the ?T.? | ||
