If it hadn't been for the cold weather, Knoxville's Jim Clayton and wife, Susan, would have been sitting in Section V, and Jim would not have been the "Fan of the Game" for today's game against Mississippi State. He was so named outside of Gate 26 at Neyland Stadium's northeast corner by Ann Long of Van Elkins and Associates, the Knoxville accounting firm overseeing the promotion. He is the sixth of seven people to be named "Fan of the Game" this year with the grand prize winner being selected at the Nov. 22 game against Vanderbilt. Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing Chip Bryant made the presentation along with Chuck Baine, owner of BreadBox, and BreadBox Operations Manager Bobby Fischer. Jim Clayton, a 1975 UT grad who majored in accounting, said he had come to games off and on since the early 1970s. "I missed a few games when I was coaching soccer, both for my kids and soccer in general," he said. Clayton is the chief financial officer for Scripps Network, a firm which includes HGTV, The Food Channel and DIY. He's been there since 1994. He and his wife received a $2500 gift certificate from BreadBox, a 25-inch television courtesy of Philips, a $250 Big Orange Checking Account from First Tennessee Bank and $250 worth of gift certificates from Goody's, Kroger and World Travel. "They asked me to step aside and told me I had a chance to be the `Fan of the Game.' I hadn't heard much about the contest, hadn't thought about it, but being in television, I can always use a TV." The grand prize winner receives a Sea Ray 185 Sport, a Toyota Tundra truck courtesy of Volunteer Toyota Dealers, two season tickets for all UT athletic events for 2004, $250 worth of gift certificates from each sponsor and the opportunity to run through the "T." | ||
