A Chattanooga, Tenn., native and University of Tennessee graduate, Shane Switzer returned to Rocky Top in February 2019 as an Assistant Media Relations Director. He currently serves as the primary media relations contact for the Tennessee volleyball and softball programs.Â
In his first six months at Tennessee, the women's swimming and diving program placed fourth at the SEC meet and eighth at NCAAs while bringing home a 200 medley relay national title, seven SEC titles and earning 25 All-America honors. On the men's side, the Vols finished third in the SEC, their highest placement since 2011, and 11th at nationals. Colin Zeng won the one-meter springboard national championship with the men's program combining for three SEC crowns and 19 All-America accolades.Â
Switzer directed the media relations efforts for Tennessee's top 25 ranked men's tennis program during the spring of 2019 which saw the team advance to the NCAA Super Regionals (Round of 16) for the first time since 2014. The tennis program also secured its first back-to-back 20 win season since 2010 and 2011 and reached the SEC Tournament final for the first time since 2013.Â
Prior to his return to Knoxville, Switzer served as an Athletic Communications Associate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. At UAB, he was the primary contact for the softball, volleyball, track and field & cross country programs while also serving as the secondary contact for the Blazers' football program. He was a part of the media relations efforts during UAB's return to the playing field, which included winning the 2018 Conference USA title and finishing with a program-best 11-3 overall record. Along with promoting the program, head coach Bill Clark was named the FWAA Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year and the Athletic Communications department was awarded the FWAA 'Super 11' in 2018.
Falling under "other duties as assigned," Switzer served as the 2017 and 2018 Birmingham Bowl media contact; working with bowl organizers, local and national media, team athletic communications personnel and broadcasters in the run up to the bowl games and on gameday, oversaw press box operations and assisted the visiting teams' communications department.
Joining UTMRÂ as a student in 2016, he worked with volleyball, football and softball, assisting with media availabilities, working on game notes, writing recaps and coordinating stat crew efforts for softball. Those stat crew efforts included being the official scorer for the 2017 SEC Softball Tournament and 2017 NCAA Regional that were hosted by Tennessee.
Switzer is an avid sports fan who closely follows the Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators and Atlanta Braves. He says the Predators are his favorite as they haven't let him down - yet. (Under pressure from the rest of the office to chose a Premier League team, he picked Liverpool and they delivered to him the first championship he has seen any of his teams win).Â
