Tennessee Triumphs 7-2 Over No. 24 Mississippi State

Starkville, Miss.-The Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team earned a weekend split of their matches in the Magnolia State, as the Orange and White defeated #24 Mississippi State, 7-2, on Sunday in Starkville, Miss. With the victory, Tennessee raises its record to 14-10 on the campaign and a 5-4 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 9-8 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas) led the Lady Vol attack as she registered another triumph over a ranked opponent, this time with a 6-2, 6-1, win over 81st-rated Amelie Detriviere at the top singles hole. At No. 6, freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.) improved to 6-1 in conference matches as she netted her 11th-straight victory after besting Eimear Sloan, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England) edged MSU's Andrea Lord, 6-4, 6-3, at the fifth singles position. Adding to the Tennessee win total was sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y.) who earned a 6-1, 6-4, decision over Ivana Belancic at No. 2 singles.
The Orange and White swept all three doubles contests on the afternoon and were led by the No. 1 duo of freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R.) and Ojeda who notched a 8-1 triumph over Carole Soubis and Sloan. The UT tandem of Reid and Wiski also recorded a win as they defeated Detriviere and Claudia Oliveira, 8-3 at the second doubles spot. At No. 3, Cleveland and sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas) completed the sweep for Tennessee with an 8-3 victory over Belancic and Lord.
The Lady Vols will next be in action on Friday (April 14) when the squad travels to face Auburn in Auburn, Ala., beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
