Vols Sweep UNC Asheville With 16-7 Win

Knoxville, Tenn. -- Tennessee scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 16-7 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs and a three-game series sweep at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Volunteers won their fourth consecutive game to pull even at 10-10, while the Bulldogs remain winless on the season, dropping to 0-5.
Tennessee pounded out 15 hits as seven Vols collected two hits. Nick Crowe, Brandon Hopkins and Matt Sternberg each drove in three runs, while Dennis Gomez doubled twice.
After taking a 2-0 lead on Sternberg's single in the first, the Vols broke the game open with five runs in the second for a 7-0 lead. Hopkins delivered a key two-run single, while the other three runs plated on a base hit by Walter Sevilla, a sacrifice fly and a fielders choice.
Jeffery Terrell (2-2) started strong by striking out six in the first three innings before giving up a two-run home run to Denver Edick in the fourth as the Bulldogs cut the lead to 7-2. He finished with nine strikeouts in six innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
Steven Cook (0-1) took the loss as he was roughed up for eight runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings.
Following a four-run fifth inning in which the Vols took an 11-2 lead, the Bulldogs pulled to within 11-6 as Bill Carley provided the key hit with a bases clearing double down the left line.
After adding a single run in the seventh, Tennessee tacked on two more in the seventh on two Bulldog errors and two more in the eighth for the final 16-7 margin.
Tennessee travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to open the Southeastern Conference portion of the schedule, Mar. 15-17.
