KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The 12th rated University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team battled swirling winds and the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday at the UT Varsity Courts and managed to conquer both with a 7-0 blanking of its league rivals. UT improves to 6-1 in Southeastern Conference play and 15-5 overall.
"It was a good win for us," said co-head coach Mike Patrick "Everyone worked really hard for their wins today. That win was just about as strong as it could have been, a little stronger than we would have like the team to play in."
Senior Agnes Wiski became just the fifth Lady Vol to amass over 100 wins in their career when she clinched the match for UT at No. 4. Wiski reached the plateau with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Elaine Fagan. The Flushing, N.Y. now has a career singles mark of 100-62.
In doubles, the Lady Vols captured all three matches for the third contest in a row. Junior Crystal Cleveland and freshman Breanna Kray raced to an 8-1 win at No. 3 first. Then No. 19 Wiski and Vilmarie Castellvi claimed the tilt at No. 1 with an 8-4 triumph over Magdolna Rekasi and Camila Sagae, while Kim Gates and Alison Ojeda pulled out an 8-6 decision over Yumi Ueda and Carole Soubis.
In singles action, Tennessee continued to dominate as the Lady Vols dropped just one set all afternoon. Castellvi was up 6-0 and 1-0 in the second set when Soubis withdrew from the match with a sore ankle. Cleveland was next to strike with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Ueda at No. 5. Wiski then sealed the contest for the Lady Vols. Gates, Robards and Ojeda all added their points after the match was decided.
Friday, Ojeda played in her first singles match since injuring her back on March 10 in the Lady Vols 4-3 win over Auburn. The San Antonio, Texas, native held on for a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Sagae in the No. 2 slot. Gates dealt Rekasi a 6-1, 6-4 setback on court three while Robards came from behind to take the No. 6 contest.
The loss drops Mississippi State to 4-12 overall and 0-7 in the SEC.
Ojeda could join Wiski in the 100-win club with three more singles victories. Also, she could become just the third Lady Vol to amass 100 singles and doubles wins in a career with four more doubles triumphs.
The Lady Vols will return to the UT Varsity Courts on Sunday for a 1 p.m. duel with Mississippi.
