Knoxville, Tenn. -- Tennessee head coach Rod Delmonico picked up the 500th victory of his career as the Volunteers edged the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 6-4, in the first of three games at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Delmonico became the ninth coach in Southeastern Conference history to reach the 500-win milestone and reached in 760 games, the third fastest of any league coach.
Matt Sternberg and Dennis Gomez each went 3-for-4 as Tennessee (8-10) pounded out 14 hits. Gomez also scored three runs and doubled twice.
Walter Sevilla singled home Gomez with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, snapping a 4-4 dealock. Two innings later, Chad LeGate then doubled home Gomez with an insurance run as Tennessee went up 6-4.
Joey Andrews (2-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Ben Riley who struck out a season-high six in 4 1/3 innings.
Terrell (Sv 2) picked up the save as he got Bill Carley to ground out to shortstop after the Bulldogs mounted a two-out rally, placing runners on first and third.
Brad Beck (0-1) took the loss in relief of Judson Ballard who allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Bulldogs (0-4) also collected 12 hits, including two apiece by Carley, Denver Edick, Grant Rembert and Scott Stotlar.
The teams matched scores early as Jordan Czarniecki scored on a ground out in the first, while Scott Stotlar singled home Denver Edick as the Bulldogs tied the game 1-1 in the second.
A Bulldog error allowed Gomez to score after he doubled to make it 2-1 in favor of Tennessee in the fourth.
Carley's two-run double capped a three-run fifth inning as the Bulldogs grabbed a 4-2 lead.
But it was short lived as Nick Crowe hit his first career home run, and Sternberg doubled home Brandon Hopkins to tie the game 4-4 in the fifth.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. There will a special pregame ceremony honoring Delmonico's 500 career victories.
