Tennessee centerfielder Jordan Czarniecki was named to the coaches' All-Southeastern Conference baseball team announced Monday by the league office in Birmingham.
Czarniecki was named to the coaches' first-team after hitting .311 with four home runs and 30 RBI. The Anderson, Ind., senior also led the SEC with 32 stolen bases (39 att) and ranked eighth in on base percentage (.438), seventh in runs scored (54). In his two seasons at Tennessee, Czarniecki recorded 56 stolen bases to rank fifth on the Vols' all-time list.
Known for his great defense and exciting diving catches in the field, Czarniecki did not make an error in 128 chances this season. He had six outfield assists while being among just five outfielders in the league to not commit an error.
The coaches selected LSU junior shortstop Aaron Hill as the SEC's Player of the Year, South Carolina's junior lefty David Marchbanks was named Pitcher of the Year and Ole Miss utility player/pitcher Stephen Head was named 2003 SEC Freshman of the Year. The coaches also tabbed LSU skipper Smoke Laval as the SEC Coach of the Year.
Marchbanks and Hill lead a list of players named to the first and second-team All-SEC squads for this season. Hill batted .367 on the season and led the SEC in doubles (24) and on-base percentage (.473). USC's Marchbanks led the SEC in wins (12), innings pitched (108.2) and batters struck out looking (32).
Laval led the Tigers to a 37-18-1 record, SEC Championship regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament. This is the first SEC title for LSU since 1997, going 20-9-1 in league play including 9-6 against the rugged SEC West.
As a freshman, Head was second in the SEC in saves with 13. This marks the second year in a row an Ole Miss player has won freshman league honors (Seth Smith in 2002).
Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own players, thus a unanimous selection earns 11 of the 12 first-team votes. No player was a unanimous selection to this year's team. The complete 2003 All-SEC Team follows:
