University of Tennessee head coach Rod Delmonico announced the signing of power-hitting junior college first baseman Chris Kemp to bring the total
number of newcomers to the 2004 class to eight.
Kemp joins the Vols after a solid career as a first and third baseman at Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, S.C. He helped lead SMC to
the 2003 NJCAA College World Series where it went 1-2. Spartanburg won 101 games in his two seasons to become the winningest class in school history.
The 2003 All-Conference selection hit .371 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI. He also laced 13 doubles with one triple while scoring 45 runs in 65 games. As
a freshman, he hit .363 with four home runs and 34 RBI in 45 games.
"Chris is the left-handed power hitter we need in the middle of our line up," said Delmonico." We have missed that ingredient the past two seasons
and are happy get a player of his caliber among our everyday players. He is versatile enough to play at first or third, but he will likely step in at
first next year."
His uncle, Hugh Kemp, pitched at the University of Georgia from 1982-83.
