Thirty-five home games with 27 contests against 2003 NCAA Tournament teams highlight Tennessee's 56-game 2004 baseball schedule, released Wednesday by head coach Rod Delmonico.
The Volunteers play a 30-game Southeastern Conference schedule culminating with the tournament at the Hoover-Met Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., May 26-30. The NCAA tournament is June 4-6 with the Super Regionals June 11-14 followed by the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., June 18-27. Games times are yet to be determined.
The schedule includes nine teams which finished among the top 50 in RPI as well as two 2003 College World Series participants in LSU and South Carolina, and nine that made the NCAA regionals.
The Volunteers open the season with a three-game set versus Morehead State for the second straight year from Feb. 13-15. Tennessee then faces the Miami Hurricanes at Coral Gables, Fla., Feb. 20-22 before opening a season-high 13-game homestand against NCAA Tournament representative and Mid-American Conference tournament champion Eastern Michigan Feb. 27-29. The homestand includes single games against Tennessee Tech and Lipscomb, two weekend series against Georgia State and Siena and a two-game midweek set versus Niagara.
Tennessee also has midweek home games against Wofford (March 31), East Tennessee State (April 7), UNC Asheville (April28) and Belmont (May 12) with three road non-conference tilts versus ETSU (March 23), Wofford (April 13) and Tennessee Tech (April 21).
The Volunteers' SEC schedule will begin at Mississippi State March 19-21. After back-to-back home series against Auburn and Kentucky, Tennessee will go on the road for two weekends at Georgia and Mississippi. Then, Tennessee will be at home for three of their final five league series, which includes LSU, Vanderbilt and a season-ending set with Florida May 21-23. The Vols mix in two road trips to Arkansas and South Carolina.
" I like the way this schedule stacks up," said Delmonico. "We have a challenging schedule with 27 games against teams that finishing the top 50 in RPI last year and face nine that reached the NCAA tournament. I think it is a schedule that will prepare us for the postseason."
