Vols Close Out Fall Season 15th at Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team closed out the fall portion of its 2004-05 schedule with a 15th-place finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Vols bettered their play during the final round, firing a 294 to go with a 303-315 for a total of 912 at the tournament, which was played at The Farm Golf Club (par 72, 7,010 yards).
Freshman Philip Pettitt led the way for UT in a tie for 29th place. For the tournament, Pettitt carded a 74-77-74--225. Pettitt's final round saw him record four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. Junior Lloyd Campbell finished one stroke back of Pettitt with a 74-77-75--226 to tie for 32nd.
Senior David Skinns was the low man of the day for the Vols with a 2-under-par 70 to go with previous scores of 77-82 for a three-round total of 229 and a tie for 48th place. Skinns opened play on the back nine with a bogey on 10, but quickly bounced back with an eagle on 12 and a birdie on 14 before a double bogey on 17. The front nine saw Skinns card birdies on holes four, six and seven before a bogey on eight and a par on nine to close out the tournament.
Seniors Ross McGowan and John Scott Rattan rounded out the Vol scoring. McGowan carded a 78-79-75--232 to tie for 62nd, while Rattan tied for 81st with an 81-83-76--240.
The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs took top team honors with a 290-297-292--879. Wake Forest, ranked No. 15, was runner-up with a 301-292-288--881, while top-ranked Georgia Tech (883) was third and East Tennessee State (895) and No. 21 Clemson (896) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Other Golfweek Top 25 finishers include No. 5 Auburn (898( in sixth, No. 17 Duke (899) in seventh, No. 6 Texas Christian (900) and No. 4 New Mexico (900) in a tie for ninth, No. 13 Augusta State (903) in 11th, No. 24 Texas Tech (905) in 12th, No. 12 Tennessee (912) in 15th and No. 7 Southern California (913) in 16th.
Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State took individual medallist honors with a scorecard of 74-70-73--217. There was a three-way tie for second between Luke List of Vanderbilt, Sean Moore of Wake Forest and Madalisto Muthiya of New Mexico with scores of 218. Brendon Todd of Georgia rounded out the top five in fifth with a 219.
The 12th-ranked Volunteers closed the fall with an overall record of 41-18 (.695) and an SEC Record of 9-7 (.563). They open the spring season, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Suntrust Gator Invitational.
