VOLS BEGIN NEW YEAR WITH DOUBLE-DUAL MEET WIN

The No. 10 Tennessee Volunteers men's swimming and diving team defeated the Princeton Tigers and No. 13 Virginia Cavaliers at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
The Vols downed Virginia 135-108 and Princeton 133-85, while Virginia topped Princeton 119-91.
"It was a great day for the Tennessee Volunteers," UT head coach John Tremble said. "We had unbelievable support from parents and friends of our athletes in attendence. Our fans turned the Virginia stands into a orange and white clad, Rocky Top singing crew who inspired all of our guys.
"We had family members from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina, Texas and California," Trembley added. "We appreciate their showing and will repsond to that support."
Tennessee's effort in the 400 medley relay gave it a lead that would not be relinquished. The Vols took first-place and three of the top four spots in the event. The foursome of sophomore Michael Wolfe, freshman Barry Murphy, junior Andrew Engle and sophomore Octavio Alesi placed won in 3:18.94.
The dominance continued in the 200 freestyle with the Vols taking first, second and third. Senior captain Tyler Gustafson won the event in 1:38.83 with fellow senior captain Bryan Goldberg following in 1:40.28. Freshman Nolan Morrell took third in 1:40.46.
Gustafson continued his strong showing with a win the the 100 freestyle in 45.34. Alesi followed in second in 45.73 with Goldberg placing fourth in 46.30.
Alesi and Murphy followed up their strong performances in the 400 medley relay with a sweep of first and second in the 50 free, respectively. Alesi won in 20.39, with Murphy chasing in second in 20.85. Freshman Jeff Sudbury finished fourth in 21.44.
Wolfe notched another victory for the Vols with a first-place showing in the 200 backstroke. Junior Brad Boswell finished fourth in 1:52.67 ahead of fellow-Vol Andrew Van Meter in fifth in 1:54.53.
Senior Casey Dauw would not be out done by fellow captains Gustafson and Goldberg. Dauw added a win of his own with a victory in the 200 I.M. in 1:49.82.
"Captain Tyler Gustafson looked awesome and we had many solid performances," Trembley said. "Andrew Engle, Jeff Sudbury, Michael Wolfe, Casey Dauw and Octavio Alesi all swam strong. I was also pleased with what I saw from Nolan Morrell and Bryan Goldberg.
Freshman diving standout Burkley Showe won the 1-meter with 316.58 points and turned in the top score in the 3-meter event as well with a point total of 328.13.
Next up for the Vols is another road test against 12th-ranked Georgia Saturday in Athens, Ga.
"Next week will be a major challenge," Trembley said of the upcoming trip to Athens, Ga. "Georgia has incredible athletes with a tremendous home pool advantage along with a three-year win-streak against us dating back to 2003. Hopefully our guys will be up to the challenge.
