HONOLULU, Hawai???i. ??? With a perfect 7-0 victory over Hawai???i (0-12) Tuesday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu, Hawai???i, the No. 20 University of Tennessee women???s tennis team (10-4) moved to double digits in the win column for the 14th-consecutive season. The Lady Vols won all nine matches in the contest, including victories in all three doubles matches and straight-set triumphs in four of the six singles showdowns.
UT jumped ahead early, winning all three doubles contests, and never looked back en route to the flawless victory. The Tennessee tandem of sophomore Connor Vogel and freshman Jennifer Meredith opened the floodgates with an 8-2 triumph over the Hawaii combo of Julia Sandborn and Marie Tanaka on the third court.
Shortly thereafter, the Orange and White duo of senior Ghizela Schutte and freshman Rosal??a Alda downed the Rainbow Wahine???s Natasha Zorec and Jennifer Goldman, 8-3, at the second position in the lineup to put the first tally on the scoreboard for Tennessee. The nation???s ninth-ranked pairing of sophomores Caitlin Whoriskey and Zs??fia Zubor then finished off UH in doubles play and picked up its 20th win of the season, cruising to an 8-4 victory of Sophie Kobuch and Chloe Bihag.
Singles action brought more of the same for the Big Orange, which dropped just two sets in six matches. The win was clinched in almost no time at all, with Tennessee competitors on courts three through six claiming quick, straight-set victories over their opponents. Following identical 6-0, 6-0 blankings by Meredith and Vogel over Tanaka and Goldman, respectively, UT found itself just a single point shy of earning its 10th win of 2008. Fortunately for the Lady Vols, they did not have to wait long, as Zubor did the honors of clinching the victory, downing Sandborn, 6-4, 6-0, on court three.
With the match in hand, Alda finished off Zorec, 6-2, 7-5, to put UT up by five. Hawai???i continued to battle hard, however, taking the contests at the top two positions to third-set tie-breakers. Junior Samantha Orlin tallied a solid, come-from-behind triumph, 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (8), against Bihag on the second court before the 71st-ranked Whoriskey finished off the day with a tough 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (5), win over No. 81 Kobuch on center court.
The sweep is just the second of the season for the Big Orange which also started the 2008 spring campaign with a 7-0 victory over in-state rival Middle Tennessee on Jan. 18.
The Orange and White will return to Rocky Top on Wednesday to begin preparations to host Southeastern Conference foe and 22nd-rated Arkansas (10-5, 3-1 SEC) on Fri., March 21. Following that contest, which is set for a 2 p.m. start at the UT Varsity Courts in Knoxville, the Lady Vols will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to square off with No. 26 LSU (8-4, 3-1 SEC) at 1 p.m. ET at the W.T. ???Dub??? Robinson Tennis Stadium two days later.
