KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? The No. 17 University of Tennessee women???s tennis team (8-3, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) had its four-match winning streak snapped Friday afternoon, as the fifth-ranked University of Florida (9-1, 3-0 SEC) claimed a 7-0 victory at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Lady Vols lone win on the day, an 8-5 triumph by the duo of senior Ghizela Schutte and freshman Rosal??a Alda over Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan on court two, was a big one however, as the victory marked the first time that a Florida doubles team has lost in dual-match play this season. The Gators had won 49 straight doubles matches this spring before the loss on Friday.
???We were happy with how hard our team competed, but we would have liked for them to have used the home court more to their advantage,??? UT co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. ???We have been on the road for the last five weeks, so when we get the opportunity to play at home, we need to take full advantage of it.
???This Sunday will be a huge match for our team,??? Hahn-Patrick said. ???South Carolina is a big rival, so it will be important for us to come back strong for that match. We look forward to the challenge.???
For the second match in a row and third time this season, the Big Orange was unable to stake claim to the all-important doubles point, as the Gators took the initial lead of the match with wins on the first and third courts. The 35th-ranked Florida duo of Julia Cohen and Anastasia Revzina started off the scoring with a quick 8-1 triumph on the third court over the Tennessee tandem of sophomore Connor Vogel and freshman Jennifer Meredith.
UT evened it up shortly thereafter though, with the victory by Alda and Schutte on the second court. Florida was undeterred, however, and took a 1-0 lead in the contest when the nation???s fifth-ranked doubles team of Megan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra took out the No. 7-rated Lady Vol combo of sophomores Caitlin Whoriskey and Zs??fia Zubor, 8-3, on center court.
Utilizing the momentum that they had put together during the doubles portion of the contest, the Gators wasted little time finishing off the Big Orange, earning victories in all six singles matches. The first Lady Vol to fall was Schutte, who dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to the 42nd-ranked Cohen on the top court. Shortly thereafter, No. 114 Alexander made it 2-0 in favor of UF with a 6-2, 6-1, triumph over UT junior Samantha Orlin at the third position in the lineup.
Just moments after No. 29 Csilla Borsanyi defeated fellow Hungarian Zubor in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-1, on the second court, Benik sealed the win for Florida with a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Meredith at the fourth slot.
With the match already within their grasp, the Gators??? continued to apply the pressure and finished off the shutout with two more triumphs, as Boonstra took out Vogel, 6-1, 6-2, before No. 89 Revzina struck the final blow with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Alda.
The Lady Vols will look to get back on track Sunday afternoon when they host No. 29 South Carolina. First serve against the Gamecocks is set for 1 p.m. at the UT Varsity Courts. Live scoring for the match will be available at www.UTLadyVols.com.
