Vols Gain Ground at Carpet Capital Collegiate

The No. 10 Tennessee men's golf team jumped two spots and finished the day in fourth place after two rounds of the 20th annual Carpet Capital Collegiate played at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga.
The Vols fired an even-par 288, improving six strokes over Friday's opening-round performance, and are eight strokes back of first place No. 12 Chattanooga. The Mocs are 2 under for the tournament after they fired a 5-under-par 291 and overtook No. 23 ETSU at the top of the team standings. ETSU is three strokes back in second followed by No. 13 Clemson in third and the Vols in fourth. No. 1 Georgia, No. 36 Mississippi and No. 14 South Carolina are all tied for fifth at 9 over par.
Senior Chris Paisley continued his strong play with a round of even par. Paisley remains tied for second place at 3 under par with three others, only two strokes behind individual leader Kyle Stanley of Clemson. The England native had two bogeys on the front nine but improved his score with three birdies on the back.
David Holmes also carded an even-par 72 in the second round and is in a tie for 26th place heading into the final round. The junior was 2 under through 8 holes but quadruple bogeyed the ninth hole before two more birdies on the back nine returned him to even.
Sophomore Robin Wingardh improved on his first-round score, shooting an even-par 72 on Saturday. Wingardh is tied for 31st place with a scorecard of 75-72--147.
Freshman Darren Renwick had the biggest improvement from the first to second round, shaving four strokes off his first round 76. Renwick jumped 15 spots and is tied for 35th at 4 over.
James Brannen is in 88th place after he struggled in the second round, shooting an 11-over-par 83.
The third and final round is scheduled to begin Sunday at 8 a.m. Eastern time.
