Swim Vols Drop Two Against Big Ten Foes

The Tennessee swimming and diving team came short in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday, losing to the Big Ten's fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines (200.00-98.00) and the No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers (159.00-138.00).
In the first event, the relay team of freshman Ricky Henehan, senior co-captian Barry Murphy, sophomore All-America Michael DeRocco and senior All-America Nolan Morrell finished third in the 200 medley relay.
Next, sophomore Geoff Sanders led the distance freestyle swimmers in the 1000 freestyle, placing fifth. Fellow sophomores Carl Jones and Scott Friderichs finished ninth and eleventh, respectively.
In the 200 freestyle, senior Olympian Jonas Persson led the Vol in sixth place. Sophomore Chris Winchell placed eighth while senior Andrew Thriwell was tenth and sophomore Michael Christy finished eleventh.
Henehan finished fourth in 100 backstroke with senior All-America Morrell in fifth. Freshman Anders Storvik finished tenth.
In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore-standout Brad Craig led UT finishing in sixth-place. Freshman Jake Epperson, senior Stephen Fortney and sophomore Mattias Kahlin placed eighth, ninth and tenth.
Sophomore Patrick Beasley, senior Greg Houchin, Sanders and Fortney placed sixth-ninth in the 200 butterfly.
Morrell led the Big Orange, placing fourth in the 50 freestyle. DeRocco, junior Jordan Walters and senior Scott Wherry finished seventh, eighth and ninth.
In the one-meter diving event, junior college national champion Michael Wright missed his season high score by less than two points and finished in second for the Vols. Freshman-sensation Ryan Helms placed third and junior Michael Muscari was fourth. In eighth was Knoxville-native Brent Sterlin and in 11th was redshirt freshman Sean Letsinger.
Persson had the Vols' highest finish in the swimming events, placing second in the 100 freestyle. Murphy, Morrell and Wherry finished sixth, seventh and ninth, respectively.
Christy, Storvik and Henehan placed sixth, seventh and eighth in the 200 backstroke.
In the 200 breaststroke, Craig led the way in third while Epperson, Fortney and Kahlin placed seventh-ninth.
Winchell, Jones, Friderichs and Sanders placed sixth-tenth in the 500 freestyle.
In the 100 butterfly, Thirwell, DeRocco, Walters and Houchin finished third-sixth.
Helms brought home the Vols' only win Saturday in the three-meter diving event. Wright, in third, had his Tennessee career best 320.55. Muscari finished fourth, Sterling placed seventh and Lestinger finished tenth.
Christy, Craig, Thirwell and Fortney finished third-sixth in the 200 individual medley.
The relay team of DeRocco, Morrell, Murphy and Persson finished third in the 400 freestyle relay and the team of Dabney, Wherry, Winchell and Storvik placed fourth.
The Vols will return to action Jan. 24 hosting the Georgia Bulldogs at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
