KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee baseball team and Head Coach Todd Raleigh will host the program's first Fraternity Home Run Derby at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Lindsey-Nelson Stadium. A total 35 competitors from 18 fraternities are set to participate in the event.
The fraternity with the most people in attendance will earn the right to use "The Porch" in left field on Friday, March 26, when the Volunteers host last season's national champion, LSU. The individual champion, meanwhile, will win a baseball autographed by Todd Helton and a behind-the-scenes tour of Tennessee's athletic facilities for himself and up to three guests. The winner will also throw out the first pitch at a Vol baseball game.
For the first round, the competitors will be split into groups of four. Each person will have two sets of five outs to rack up as many home runs as they can. The individual with the most round-trippers from each group will advance to one of two semifinal rounds where they will get 10 more outs. The top hitter from each of those rounds will move on to a head-to-head final for an additional 10 outs to determine the overall winner.
Standard baseball rules apply (i.e. foul lines) and any swing that is not a home run will be counted as an out. If there is a tie, the participants will each receive three additional outs. If no home runs are hit during that time, the winner will be the person who hits the ball the furthest.
