Tennessee sophomore Ryan Harrison broke UT's 500 freestyle record on day two of the 2011 SEC Swimming Championships at Florida's O'Connell Center Natatorium.
The Londonderry, Northern Ireland, native, swam an A-cut mark of four minutes 15.13 seconds, winning the consolation final in ninth place. Harrison's mark bested Geoff Sanders 4:16.20, the previous record, by more than a second. Freshman Sam Petersen scored for the first time at the conference meet, finishing 15th in four minutes 26.46 seconds, an NCAA B-cut. Sanders also earned a B-cut in 18th with a time of four minutes 26.50 seconds.
"Ryan has worked hard, performed consistently, stayed healthy and deserves this record," head coach John Trembley said. "He is at the top of a list that includes an Olympic gold medalist and his coach Lars Jorgensen. Great work by Sam, as well. He earned his stripes today."
Senior Brad Craig won the consolation final of the 200 I.M. with a ninth-place time of one minute 46.20 seconds, an NCAA B-cut. Michael Christy scored in 15th with a time of one minute 48.23 seconds.
In the 50 free, captain Michael DeRocco finished ninth, winning the consolation final in a B-cut time of 19.74 seconds. Sophomore Ed Walsh was 14th with a B-cut mark of 19.97 seconds.
To conclude day two, the Vols 200 free relay team of DeRocco, Walsh, Samuel Rairden and Anders Storvik finished fourth in one minute 18.73 seconds, an NCAA B-cut time.
"Our 200 free relay was good, but we'll have to see how it stacks up with other NCAA times," Trembley said. "The Vols are going to need to catch fire tomorrow in prelims and swim like we did this evening."
With two days in the books, the Vols slipped into third place behind first-place Auburn and second-place Florida.
Friday's action begins at 10 a.m. Live results as well as live streaming video can be found at www.UTsports.com.
