KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vols (8-11, 0-7) fell 4-1 to the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs (13-4, 6-1) on Saturday at Barksdale Stadium.
It was a tough start for the Volunteers as Georgia won the first nine games in doubles before seniors Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams got on the board. Sophomores Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont fell 8-0 to the duo of Silvia Garcia and Kennedy Shaffer, the 20th ranked doubles team in the country. Junior Tiffany Tavares and sophomore Victoria Olivarez fell 8-3 to the team of Laura Patterson and Hannah King, clinching the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
Henderson and Williams had won 3 straight games to make it 4-6 against the No. 16 pair of Lauren Herring and Ellen Perez when the point was clinched.
In singles, Olivarez secured the lone point for the Lady Vols as she defeated No. 55 Hannah King 6-3, 6-3 on court 5. Henderson, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, looked to get her third straight win against a ranked opponent, but her attempt fell short as No. 11 Lauren Herring won 6-2, 6-1. Tavares lost to Caroline Brinson 6-1, 6-3 on court 6. Georgia clinched the match after No. 58 Shaffer defeated Williams 6-3, 6-3.
Repic and Guevremont both went unfinished in their matches. Repic led Garcia 7-5, 2-3 in her match. Guevremont was behind 7-5, 5-2 to Gould, who was serving for match when the match ended.
"I think they competed really hard," co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said about the team's performance. "It was tough losing the doubles point, but I think they came back even stronger. It was really encouraging to see the fight they had. I think that is going to continue to get better and better. I think their confidence is rising, which will help us for next week."
The Lady Vols will head on their second SEC road trip of the season next weekend as they travel to face Missouri on Friday and Arkansas on Sunday.
"Right now, it is a mental thing for them and not getting discouraged," Hahn-Patrick said on preparing for their upcoming matches. "All of our practices have continued to get better, and I think they are starting to feel more comfortable and buying in to what they need to do."
