AUSTIN, Texas -- Tennessee Track and Field continued its weekend at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, getting solid performances across the three events in which it competed on Friday. Kyle Quinn (javelin), Matthew Zajac (discus), Tavis Bailey (discus), and Erin Champion (pole vault) each turned in top-10 finishes on the day.
On the heels of Tyler Porter's second-place finish in Section B of the men's pole vault on Thursday, UT athletes have now garnered five finishes inside the top 10 across four events at the Texas Relays. Add in the second and seventh place finishes, respectively, from Bailey and Matthew Zajac in the men's discus at Thursday night's Bobcat Invitational, and the Vols boast a total of six top-10s through six events this weekend.
Champion opened the day for Tennessee, competing in Section B of the women's pole vault on Friday morning. With a vault of 12 feet, 7.5 inches (3.85 meters), she finished in a tie for 10th at the conclusion of the competition.
Not long thereafter, Quinn took to Section A of the men's javelin. Coming off a third-place finish at last week's Alabama Relays, the redshirt junior finished in sixth-place behind an effort of 223 feet, eight inches (68.19) to collect his second top-10 finish of the season. His top throw of the day came on his second-to-last throw of the competition after he had qualified for the finals with an opening throw of 218 feet, seven inches (66.63).
Zajac took part in Section B of the men's discus competition, placing sixth with a throw of 167 feet, eight inches (51.12). It was the second straight day the freshman had competed in the discus as he also took part in the event on Thursday evening at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas.
Rounding out the day was Bailey, competing in his second discus competition in as many days. The senior used a throw of 186 feet, seven inches (56.87) to finish in eighth-place and snare his second top-10 of the weekend. Like Quinn, Bailey's top mark came on his penultimate attempt. He qualified for the final round of the event with a mark of 183 feet, three inches (55.85) on his third throw.
Bailey wraps up his busy weekend on Saturday when he joins teammate Matthew Hoty in Section A of the men's shot put. That competition gets underway at 5 p.m. ET. On the women's side, Cassie Wertman will be simultaneously competing in Section A of the women's shot put, also beginning at 5 p.m. The men's pole vault begins the day, though, as national indoor runner-up Jake Blankenship opens up his outdoor season at 2:45 p.m. in the Elite Section of the event.
