PHILADELPHIA -- Tennessee Track and Field opened up its weekend at the 121st Penn Relays on Thursday, competing in four events and collecting two top-five finishes along the way. Freshman Cidae'a Woods earned UT's first medal on the weekend when she placed third in the women's long jump while Erin Champion was fourth in the women's pole vault.
At the time of this writing, Anthony Simpson is still awaiting the start of the men's 10,000-meters at Franklin Field.
Competing in the college section of the women's long jump, Woods' third-place finish ranks as the highest of her career in the event. She posted a leap of 19 feet, two inches (5.84) en route to the medal stand at her first Penn Relays. It was the second-best jump of her season as she narrowly missed her PR by just 1.5 inches.
Champion got things rolling for UT on Thursday afternoon in the women's pole vault championship section. After clearing 3.80 and 3.90 meters on back-to-back jumps, the junior saw her day come to an end at the 4.00 bar. She closed out the event in fourth place at 12 feet, 9.5 inches (3.90).
On the track, graduate transfer Anthony Simpson ran a 31:38.76 in the men's 10,000-meter championship to finish in 27th place. It was the first race he had complete for the Orange and White after making his debut at the Tennessee Relays Powered by Sea Ray earlier in the month. He ran the 10k in that event as well, but did not finish.
Chelsea Blaase was scheduled to race in the women's 3000-meter championship, but she was scratched just prior to the start. Senior Kyle Walter competed in the men's 5000-meter college section, but did not complete the race.
Tennessee continues its weekend at the historic Penn Relays with a busy day on Friday. The Volunteers have 10 events on the docket, starting at 9 a.m. with Matthew Zajac in the men's discus college section. Other notable events on tap include the men's shot put championship (Tavis Bailey, Matthew Hoty), the women's 100-meter dash (Felicia Brown), and the men's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.
