Coleman Named SEC Men's Indoor Runner of Year
March 07, 2016 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee sophomore sprinter Christian Coleman was named the 2016 SEC Indoor Track and Field Men's Runner of the Year and 13 Vols were named to All-SEC teams on Monday as the Southeastern Conference announced its 2016 Indoor Track and Field Awards.
Coleman tied for the 2016 Cliff Harper Trophy, recognizing the high-points scorer at the SEC Indoor Championships, with 20 total points. He was the 2016 SEC Champion in the 60 meters and was second in both the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay. He will compete in all three events at this week's 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham. Coleman ran a personal best 20.54 in the 200 meters at the SEC Championships, which ranks third in the nation, second in the SEC and fourth in school history.
All-SEC First Team consists of the top finishers in each event at the SEC Championships. All-SEC Second Team consists of the second and third place finishers in each event. For award purposes, ties are not broken. The all-freshman team (one men's and one women's) consists of the highest freshman (true or redshirt) finisher in each event, excluding relays, and ties are not broken.
Coleman is the fourth Tennessee man to win a SEC annual award for the indoor season, joining Justin Gatlin (2001 SEC Freshman of the Year, 2002 SEC Athlete of the Year), Jangy Addy (2008 SEC Field Athlete of the Year) and Marc Sylvester (2002 SEC Freshman of the Year).
Coleman and Cameron Brown were named to the Men's All-SEC First Team. Brown defended his SEC indoor title for the weight throw with throw of 73-1.25 (22.28 meters) at the SEC Championships.
Jake Blankenship, Antonio Carter, Ari Cogdell and Nathan Strother garnered Men's All-SEC Second Team honors. Blankenship took third place at the league meet in the men's pole vault. Carter, Cogdell and Strother joined Coleman on UT's silver-medal 4x400.
Matthew Zajac was named to the Men's All-Freshman Team after taking 11th place in the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 53-10.50 (16.42 meters). He also placed 12th in the men's weight throw with a throw of 63-4.25 (19.31 meters).
Chelsea Blaase, Felicia Brown, Lenysse Dyer, Felecia Majors and Layla White earned Women's All-SEC First Team honors. Blaase won the 3000 meters a career-best time of 9:20.57 and captured the 5000 meters in 16:22.32. She was also the co-winner of the 2016 Cliff Harper Trophy with 20 total points. Brown captured two golds, winning the 200 meters in school-record and world-leading time of 22.45 and running anchor on UT's SEC champion 4x400 relay that clocked a school-record 3:30.56. Dyer, Majors and White also ran on Tennessee's winning 4x400 relay.
Cassie Wertman was named to the Women's All-SEC Second Team after placing second in the shot put with a PR throw of 56-6.75 (17.24 meters).
