KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee had a rough night in its SEC opener on Friday evening, falling to Alabama, 5-1, in front of a season-high crowd of 1,165 fans at Regal Soccer Stadium.
Carlyn Baldwin scored the only goal for the Volunteers after putting away her own rebound on a penalty kick attempt in the second half. Three different players scored goals for the Crimson Tide as they improved to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in SEC play.
The Vols (3-4, 0-1 SEC) had chances to score early and nearly took the lead in the sixth minute, but Maya Neal's shot rang off the left post. UT created a handful of other quality opportunities in the first 30 minutes of the game but were unable to convert.
Anna Bialczak sent a hard-hit shot on goal in the 21st minute that was turned away by Alabama's keeper and Hannah Wilkinson looked to have a sure goal just moments later, but headed her attempt in front of goal just wide. The New Zealand native had another good chance in the 26th minute, but sent her shot just over the bar.
The Crimson Tide made the most of their first-half opportunities, scoring four goals on just five shot attempts. Chatham DeProspo led the charge with a trio of highlight-reel goals for a first-half hat trick and Taylor Hubbard added another just before halftime to give Bama a 4-0 lead at the break despite being outshot, 6-5, in the opening 45 minutes.
Tennessee was finally able to capitalize and get on the board in the 60th minute after Neal was taken down in the box to draw a penalty kick. Baldwin's attempt was saved Kat Stratton but the junior from Oakton, Va., was able to hammer home the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Alabama regained its four-goal advantage and capped off the scoring in the 76th minute on a goal by Abbie Boswell, who curled in a strike from about 15 yards out for her fourth goal of the year. Despite the final score, shots for the game finished at an even 13 apiece.
The Big Orange will be looking for a big bounce-back win on Sunday afternoon when they host in-state foe Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m.
