Lindl, Vols Start Strong at Invitational
January 14, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Brittany Lindl picked up her second ranked win of the season, as Tennessee competed in the first day of the Michigan Invitational at Varsity Tennis Center.
The day began with a round of singles against Arizona State. After dropping the first set, Lindl fought back and defeated 63rd-ranked Kassidy Jump in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
Senior Eve Repic fell short in the first set of her match but came back to down Nicole Fossa-Huergo, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-1. Redshirt freshman Gabby Schuck won her first match of the season, beating Gussie O'Sullivan, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
"I want to send a special thank you to our training staff for working hard to help get Gabby Schuck back on court," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "She played a tough opponent, who forced the match to go into a third set, and Gabby's body allowed her to compete at a high level to pull out the win."
The Vols ended the day with a round of doubles against Michigan, taking two out of the three matches over the Wolverines. Schuck and sophomore Sadie Hammond outlasted the duo of Chiara Lommer and Brienne Minor, 6-4. Sophomore Ashley Bongart and freshman Johanna Silva teamed up for the first time this season to beat Mira Ruder-Hook and Valeria Patiuk, 6-4.
"The two teams we competed against today, Arizona State and Michigan, are two of the most well-coached teams in the country," Ojeda said. "We will see the same thing from DePaul tomorrow. When we compete against these teams, we can always expect to have to work hard for every single point. Our goal was to come out today and continue to improve on shot selection. Our entire team did that. We also did an excellent job of competing both physically and mentally on every court."
Tennessee will start play tomorrow at 10 a.m., beginning with a round of singles against DePaul followed by a round of doubles against Arizona State.
