Vols Dominate Singles on Day 2 of Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Tennessee women's tennis posted a dominant performance in singles on Sunday during day two of the Michigan Invitational at Varsity Tennis Center.
The Vols opened the day with a round of singles against DePaul, claiming five of the six matches. Senior Eve Repic and redshirt freshman Gabby Schuck both improved to 2-0 on the weekend. Repic breezed past Aspasia Avgeri, 6-2, 6-1. Schuck lost the second set in a tiebreaker but was able to hold off a comeback for the win over Marina Cozac, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
"I'm very proud of our team," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We continued our focus on shot selection and again improved in singles on every court. DePaul got better and better as the match went on, and our team mentally handled that challenge well. Our freshman were extremely instrumental in today's match."
Sophomore Sadie Hammond outlasted Keisha Clousing in a back-and-forth match for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Freshmen Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva both had straight-set wins on the day for the Vols.
"It was incredible playing in between the two freshmen," Hammond said. "Every time I looked at over them, Jo was playing so solid and Ari was so fired up. After they both won their first sets and matches, it made me want to pull my match through even more. I was so impressed by their competitiveness and fight."
UT ended the day with a round of doubles against Arizona State. The Sun Devils swept the three matches. However, Riley and sophomore Kim Kermet played an additional match against DePaul's Milicia Tesic and Marina Cozac and avoided a complete sweep in doubles by taking the match, 6-2.
Tennessee will start play tomorrow at 1 p.m., beginning with a round of doubles against DePaul followed by a round of singles against Michigan.
