KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee men's tennis team rallied past North Florida 5-2 and swept Austin Peay 7-0 in a doubleheader Monday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Sophomore Timo Stodder went a combined 8-0 between singles and doubles and freshman Scott Jones was 7-0 to lead Tennessee (4-0) in the opening weekend.
After losing the doubles point to North Florida, the Vols rallied in singles play. The back half of the lineup led the way, with Jones, Luca Wiedenmann and Jack Schipanski collecting straight-set wins to put Tennessee up 3-1.
Junior Luis Valero clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jefta Kecic on court 2.
After the match was decided, Stodder earned his highest ranked win of the season, defeating No. 51 Jack Findel-Hawkins 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the top of the lineup.
North Florida had pushed No. 2-ranked Wake Forest in a 5-2 loss on Saturday, also winning the doubles point in that match.
"We knew North Florida was going to be a very good team," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "They had better energy than us in doubles, and it showed in the performance. It was a good shock to our system, and our guys rebounded very well though. I thought the effort in singles and the closeness of the team was fantastic. Luis and Timo's performance at 1 and 2 reminded me of our successful teams when we are extremely competitive at 1 and 2."
The Vols returned to the courts in the afternoon against Austin Peay, dropping only one set en route to the Vols' first shutout of the season. Senior Sunay Bhat won his first dual match of the season, beating James Mitchell of Austin Peay 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match on court 6.
Tennessee plays at Georgia Tech next Sunday.
