Vols Conclude Tournament Season
January 16, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team wrapped up its tournament season Monday, during the final day of the Michigan Invitational at Varsity Tennis Center.
It was a tough day for the Vols, who were swept in doubles by DePaul and picked up only one win in singles against Michigan. Freshman Johanna Silva defeated Valeria Patiuk, 6-4, 6-3, to get into the win column.
Despite a tough day, head coach Alison Ojeda still saw positives from the weekend.
"I'm so proud of our team because today we are leaving this event a much better team than we were 3 days ago," Ojeda said. "Three days ago our coaching staff challenged our team to develop better shot selection. We wanted our players to understand how shot selection minimizes our unforced errors as well as maximizes offensive opportunities.
"The foundation of this team starts with understanding the culture we are creating. This has been shown through the bonding of our whole team including our manager, athletic trainer and the rest of our support staff. Together we have a very clear vision of what we want to do and an exact understanding of what it's going to take to get there."
Tennessee now turns its focus to team play, as the Vols prepare for doubleheaders against Air Force and Middle Tennessee on Jan. 21 and Wake Forest and Chattanooga on Jan. 22.
"We will continue to grow as we use the information gained from the last few days of competition and apply it to practice this week," Ojeda said. "We are working hard and looking forward to our fans watching us this weekend."
