Lady Vol Hoops Report (1/18/17)
January 18, 2017 | Women's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Head Coach Holly Warlick met with the media on Wednesday as the Lady Vols prepare for their game against Auburn on Thursday. The game will tip off at 6:02 p.m. CT (7:02 ET) at Auburn Arena and will be carried online on SECN+ and through WatchESPN.
Tennessee (11-6, 2-2 SEC) returns to SEC play versus the Tigers (13-5, 3-1) after knocking off annual non-conference foe #6/6 Notre Dame in Knoxville on Monday night, 71-69. Auburn will enter the contest with a seven-day break from competition. The Tigers, winners of four of their past five, were victorious at Vanderbilt, 64-59, in their last game on Jan. 12.
Here are some of Warlick's thoughts heading into the game.
Head Coach Holly Warlick Quotes
(On the challenges of Auburn)
"They press for 40 minutes. They make you play a hurry-up offense. They turn you over, because when they turn you over they like to score off your turnovers. They score tons of points off that. We have to take care of the basketball and be in attack mode. It is one thing to press, but they keep coming at you. You can't beat the press and pull back; you have to stay in attack mode. That will be huge for us. The key for us is taking care of the ball and attacking the basket."
(On the game against Ole Miss)
"That game will never be far from our mind. The power of the SEC and the quality of the teams means you can get beaten on any given night. I would be shocked if we took Auburn lightly because we have experienced that, and we do not want to go through it again."
(On road game performances)
"With the great crowd that we have, we tend to put up some great games here. I think we have played some tough opponents on the road, and Auburn is no exception. It is a tough place to play. I think every place we play in the SEC is tough. This is a hard conference to win on the road, and we are going to try and go out and break that losing streak. We are focused on what we need to do, and if we focus on what we need to do we will win the game."
(On how they played Monday and the confidence gained from it)
"You have to build on your confidence, and I thought we played well down the stretch. We did not play a perfect game, but we stepped up and did things when we needed to. I know that gave us confidence. If we play with that effort and that heart and we play together, we will be hard to beat."
(On Schaquilla Nunn's play)
"I said that we wouldn't have won the Kentucky game without what she did, and we wouldn't have won the Notre Dame game without what she did. She just comes in and finds the points. If there is a lull, she will come in and find points. She gets the rebounds when we need them. She has been a huge lift off the bench for us, and hopefully, she will continue to do that and continue to get more minutes as we go."
